The Rhythm of God

When I woke up today I wasn’t worried about the sun rising. I just knew it would.

There is a beauty in rhythm. God says so. In Genesis 1 we see a predictability to there being
“morning and evening.” God establishes His rhythm from the beginning. It only takes two
chapters until the rhythm of God is disrupted as Adam and his wife eat the forbidden fruit in
Genesis 3. There are aspects of life in God that He desires to see demonstrated; yet, time and
time again, humanity disrupts God’s beautiful rhythm. We find ourselves in relationship with a
God who is loving, ever-present, and a good Father. We also find ourselves inhabiting a space
that often rages against God’s preferred purpose.

What do you do when your circumstance does not line up with the God you know?

There is an old Puritan prayer that reads “in a world of created, changeable things, you remain
constant and unshaken.” Reducing God’s character to what we see is easy, convenient, and
often becomes an excuse to blame Him for a world gone awry. It takes courage to believe God
is as good as He says He is. It requires vulnerability to trust Him when day in and day out what
we experience doesn’t match with what He promises.

God’s rhythm has more to do with His character than our experience.

Proverbs 3:5 asks us to “trust in the Lord with all of our heart.” When you aren’t quite sure
what to expect or how to respond, know this, trusting God is always appropriate. After all,
when we trust Him, we are never put to shame (Psalm 25:3).
